Recycled Rubber User Guide

Glossary of Terms and Acronyms Page 15 | 27 Mesh A term commonly used to describe or measure the size of rubber. As an example, crumb rubber is sized by the screen through which it passes in the production process. The finer the screen, the more openings it will have per linear inch, (i.e., 30 mesh means there are 30 holes or openings per linear inch). The greater number of openings, the smaller the material must be to pass through the screen. Mesh Screen Sizes Picture Manufacturer (Tires) The name of a company or wholly owned subsidiary making the tire. Mill Machine composed of two large iron or steel counter rotating rolls, used to warm, mix, and blend rubber. Millimeter (mm) A metric unit of measure. 1 mm = 0.039 inches (or 25.4 mm = 1 inch). Micronized Rubber A fine, dry, powdered elastomeric crumb rubber in which a significant proportion of particles are 425 mm (40 mesh) or finer. Micronized Rubber Powder (MRP) Some companies have defined MRP particle size distributions to be from 180 µm (80 mesh) to 20 µm (635 mesh).
